Keith Wyness, Everton’s former manager, has suggested that Leicester City will receive an update on their potential point punishment within days.
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, insisted the Foxes will face a points penalty “without a doubt” despite the delay in scheduling a hearing.
Leicester were charged by the Premier League in March for violating Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the 2022-23 season.
The Foxes have lost a total of £215 million over the last three top-flight seasons, while clubs are only allowed to lose £105 million over three years under PSR.
Leicester took legal action in response to the charge, delaying the announcement of an independent panel that might impose a punishment.
According to Wyness, Leicester will almost certainly lose points
Wyness expects to hear about a potential deduction next week, and he believes the promoted club will not avoid a penalty unless the regulations are changed significantly.
He told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “It’s all happening behind closed doors right now with the lawyers.”
“I’ve been following this situation very closely, and I’d expect some news next week.”We’ll see how it works, but it’s going to be challenging. Without a doubt, some points will be deducted, and Leicester will have to fight with one hand tied behind their back next season.
“The timing of the hearings will be critical. They delayed the inquiry by taking action against the Premier League. However, cooperation with the investigation removes a potential appeal.Overall, Leicester will face a difficult challenge, but they will be prepared to fight.
“Without a big change in the rules, it’s hard to see how they escape punishment – but they’ll give it a go, I’m sure of that.”
