News Flash: Highly Rated Recruit Shortlists NC State

Shamarius Peterkin, a highly sought-after wide receiver from Winston Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor, is nearing the end of his recruitment process. On Saturday, the four-star prospect, who has narrowed his choices to NC State, Virginia Tech, and UNC, announced that he will reveal his college decision on August 16.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 172 pounds, Peterkin visited all three schools in June, with his last visit to NC State leaving a strong impression.

“The visit went well,” Peterkin commented earlier this week. “It was a good experience being around the coaches and getting to know them better. I also enjoyed spending time with the players. My host was Kevin Concepcion, and it was great talking to him.

“NC State is a school I’m seriously considering. They’ve been in touch since my sophomore year and have worked hard to strengthen our bond. Coach Joker (Phillips) is always available to talk, and I can reach out to him anytime.

“My favorite part of the visit was talking to Kevin Concepcion about why he chose NC State and discussing the school with him. Spending time with Coach Joker and getting to know him better face-to-face was also a highlight.”

A key factor in Peterkin’s consideration of NC State is his long-standing relationship with Coach Phillips, which began in his ninth grade year. Since Peterkin’s first visit to the campus, the two have developed a strong connection.

“Outside of the formal meetings, we had one-on-one conversations where we laughed and joked,” Peterkin shared. “We talked about life, my summer, high school football, and summer workouts. Coach Joker is always honest with me—there’s no sugarcoating. I can talk to him about anything.”

As a junior, Peterkin recorded 42 receptions for 824 yards (averaging 19.6 yards per catch) and scored 12 touchdowns. He also excelled in special teams, returning seven kickoffs for 210 yards and five punts for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Ranked as a Top247 prospect, Peterkin is the 22nd-ranked receiver in his class and the sixth-best player in North Carolina, according to 247Sports.
