The Dallas Cowboys are taking a break before the 2024 season begins. Training camp is scheduled to begin on July 25 in Oxnard, California.
The Cowboys have never shied away from national media attention, but that comes with the territory of being America’s team. In Dallas, the expectation is Super Bowl or bust, so anything less will be unacceptable.
It remains to be seen whether it is a fair aim, but the Cowboys will be under tremendous pressure in 2024. The running back group has changed, with Tony Pollard leaving for free agency and Ezekiel Elliott returning to town.
Despite Zeke’s potential as a lead tailback in the backfield, another alternative has emerged on the free agent market.
NFL News: Leonard Fournette Plans to Continue NFL Career
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, free-agent running back Leonard Fournette hopes to sign with a team before the regular season begins. His agent, Ari Nissim, stated, “Leonard is in the best shape of his career, and I expect him to have a new home soon.”
At this point in his career, Fournette is hardly the No. 1 backfield option, but he might contribute to a committee.
Fournette is a powerful runner who can wear down defenders as the game goes on. If the Cowboys chose to bring him in, they’d have two powerful running backs in Fournette and Zeke. It wouldn’t cost much either.
Because of his outstanding postseason performance, the LSU product has earned the nickname ‘Playoff Lenny’. In nine playoff games, the 29-year-old has carried 152 times for 604 yards and ten touchdowns. He also recorded 35 receptions for 254 yards.
If the Cowboys want to add more depth to their backfield, they could check into the veteran tailback.
