Louisville football significantly strengthened their 2025 recruiting class today by adding 4-star edge rusher CJ May. Previously committed to Notre Dame, May chose Louisville over Auburn, Syracuse, and Washington, and had offers from prominent programs such as Tennessee, Georgia, Clemson, Texas A&M, Miami, and Penn State.
May is the first composite 4-star recruit in the class, making him a key acquisition for Ron English and the Louisville defensive staff. Standing at 6-4 and weighing 230 pounds, May has a frame that can accommodate additional weight once he arrives at college. As a pass rusher, his technique is inconsistent, but when executed correctly, it proves to be very effective. Although his arm length isn’t extraordinary compared to some other top-rated edges, May compensates with his athleticism and skill set.
Under Jeff Brohm, Louisville has prioritized the transfer portal, and this strategy is expected to continue given the number of players they need to replace after this season. Despite this, May has a strong chance of seeing playing time as a freshman. If he enrolls in the spring, he could increase his weight by fall and contribute as a package player and on special teams. The main question is whether he will play at the LEO position or as a defensive end, but he has the potential to excel in either role.
