The Cleveland Guardians, currently competing for the top spot in the American League, are expected to be active buyers before the MLB trade deadline. With a 59-40 record, they are well on track to surpass their 76-win total from last season, having led the AL Central since April 14. Despite their strong showing, there’s room for improvement, particularly in the starting rotation and the lineup. Adding a few key pieces via trades could solidify their position as World Series contenders.
Cleveland’s front office, despite any initial expectations, must now push for a title this season. They have a wealth of minor league talent, with four top-100 prospects according to MLB Pipeline. While the Guardians are keen on maintaining a strong future, they might be willing to part with some top prospects to secure immediate upgrades. While top prospect Chase DeLauter, ranked 28th overall, is unlikely to be moved unless it’s for a top-tier pitcher like Garrett Crochet or Tarik Skubal, other prospects are on the table.
Juan Brito, acquired from the Rockies in exchange for Nolan Jones, is an intriguing piece. After posting an .811 OPS across three levels in 2023, he’s continued to improve, hitting over .300 in July and showing power potential with 14 home runs and 31 doubles last season. Brito’s hitting splits are notable: .324 with a .972 OPS from the right side and .225 with a .651 OPS from the left. Although he lacks speed and defensive versatility, his ability to play multiple positions could make him a valuable utility player in the future.
Brito, while not the centerpiece of a major trade, could be a valuable component in acquiring a mid-tier target. With the Guardians’ middle infield potentially featuring Andres Gimenez and Travis Bazzana by 2026, Brito’s playing time may be limited, making him a reasonable candidate to be included in a trade deal.
Long-time Cleveland minor-leaguer George Valera could be available for trade. MLB The Show enthusiasts will recognize Valera’s name. The American-born outfielder, who signed with the Guardians for over $1 million as an international free agent in 2017 after moving to the Dominican Republic, is now 23 years old and on the cusp of the major leagues. Despite his potential, Valera has struggled with injuries and hasn’t quite broken through this season.
After missing all of April, Valera has managed a .722 OPS in 52 games, with 16 extra-base hits, 25 RBIs, and 26 runs scored. Recently, he’s shown signs of finding his form, with five hits in his last three games. Although his stock has dipped due to a down year in 2023, a strong finish to 2024 could position him for a shot at the Opening Day roster next season. Currently viewed as a fringe fourth outfielder, Valera’s potential and versatility keep him in the conversation.
Valera can play all three outfield positions but has primarily played the corners this season. While his arm and speed may limit him in centerfield, he’s solid defensively, with no errors in over 360 innings last year and seven outfield assists in 2023, along with three more this season.
Despite his down year, Valera’s ranking as a top-10 organizational prospect and his versatility make him intriguing. Cleveland might be willing to part with him, especially if another team values his potential and tools. The Guardians tend to prioritize outfield prospects, but with a depth of talent and a need to improve their current roster, Valera could be an expendable asset to facilitate a key trade ahead of the deadline.
