Leg cramps forced the Guardians’ star pitcher Tanner Bibee to exit Wednesday’s Cleveland vs. Detroit game after he had pitched five innings.
When Bibee took the mound to begin the sixth inning, he winced in pain as he prepared to deliver his warm-up pitches. He stretched and applied pressure above his right knee for a while.
Bibee made the decision to leave the field after speaking with team trainer Scott Barlow and manager Stephen Vogt. Vogt stated that although the cramps generally happen later in games, Bibee has been experiencing them all summer.
Vogt stated, “Tanner is a competitive guy, and we’re working to manage it with the hot and humid conditions.” “We’re all looking for the best solutions to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
Bibee threw 67 pitches in his five innings and gave up one run, which came via a home run by Matt Vierling. With an 8-4 record and a 3.50 ERA this season, he finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year competition in 2023.
Cleveland’s starting pitchers have presented difficulties thus far this season. After undergoing Tommy John surgery, Shane Bieber will miss the entire season. After starting the season in the rotation, Triston McKenzie and Logan Allen have been sent down to Triple-A Columbus.
