Coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions announced on Thursday that kicker Michael Badgley had suffered a serious injury and was placed on injured reserve. While getting ready for practice, Badgley tore his hamstring, which required surgery and ended his season.
Campbell told Sports Illustrated, “Badgley had a significant injury yesterday getting ready for practice.” “He’s actually getting surgery, so he will be gone for the season and placed on injured reserve shortly. Feel terrible for Badge, dude. He put in a ton of effort to prepare for the season, had a nice spring, and was prepared for camp. Anyhow, it’s difficult.
Badgley, who was up against rookie Jake Bates for the starting job, has been an important member of the Lions’ team the past two seasons. Last year, he made all four of his postseason field goals and 24 of his 28 regular-season field goals.
There is presently only one kicker on the Lions roster: Ezoic Bates, who made waves with the UFL’s Michigan Panthers.
Campbell said, “We actually just brought in some guys and held a workout to take a look at.” That’s something Brad and I are currently discussing. However, we’re also not in a rush. We will do it after we locate the ideal candidate who will assist us in the competition for camp.
The Lions are carefully assessing their options in light of Badgley’s injury to guarantee depth and fierce competition at the kicker position as the season draws near.
