Cornerback Trevon Diggs has been medically cleared to return to practice after starting the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list last week.
Diggs tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during practice on September 21, just two games into the 2023 season, causing him to miss the rest of the year.
When asked about reintegrating Diggs into the training-camp routine in Oxnard, California, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said, “Smartly.”
“The most important thing is for him to stay on his rehab program with (trainer) Britt (Brown),” McCarthy explained. “Getting him into the jog-throughs and the teaching drills is the first step, and then we’ll see how he progresses into the individual drills. …
“No one wants to sit in the classroom all day and then watch his teammates compete. He definitely misses it, and I know he’ll be excited to be out there.”
In 2021, Trevon Diggs earned first-team All-Pro honors by intercepting 11 passes, the most in a single season in the NFL in 40 years.
After making the Pro Bowl again in 2022 and heading into the final season of his rookie contract in 2023, the Cowboys signed Diggs to a five-year, $97 million contract extension in July 2023.
“He’s such a playmaker,” McCarthy said about what Dallas missed without Diggs on the field in 2023. “His ability to go get the football, challenge receivers, and create matchups – we missed all of that. We missed his entire game. His value is evident both from his contract and the way his teammates reacted when he went down. That was a tough day for everyone.”
The Cowboys begin their three-game preseason schedule on August 11 against the Los Angeles Rams and start their regular season on September 8 against the Cleveland Browns.
