Detroit Lions defensive end John Cominsky was carted off the practice field on Tuesday after tearing the MCL in his right knee, according to multiple media reports. Cominsky sustained the injury during a running play in the team’s second padded practice of training camp. He is expected to be out indefinitely following surgery, with a potential return if the Lions make it to the postseason.

The 28-year-old is entering his sixth NFL season and third with the Lions, where he started 11 of 16 games last season, recording 36 tackles and two sacks. Cominsky played 569 snaps, accounting for 56 percent of the team’s defensive plays, and started all three of the Lions’ playoff games, making seven tackles. Originally selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Cominsky accumulated 41 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 27 games (one start) from 2019 to 2021. After being released, he signed with Detroit, where he started eight of 14 games in 2022, recording 30 tackles and four sacks.
