Due to a temporary knee ailment, top running back Montrell Johnson Jr. has caused an unexpected setback for the Florida Gators. Johnson is a vital part of the Gators’ attack, but the coaching staff has him listed as “week-to-week” after he had a minor arthroscopic procedure.
The influence Johnson has had on the squad is immeasurable. With more over 2,500 career running yards under his belt, the senior back has led the Gators in rushing the last two seasons, averaging over 800 yards per game. At this year’s media days, his performances earned him a spot on the second team of the SEC, demonstrating his value to the squad.
The August 31st season opener versus Miami presents an opportunity for the Gators to modify their game strategy.
In Johnson’s absence, sophomore Treyaun Webb is expected to take over as the starting quarterback. In addition to showing promise with two scores and 163 rushing yards on 26 carries last season, Webb also displayed versatility with four 18-yard receptions.
During spring camp, Webb expressed his readiness for increased responsibility, stating, “It’s a big opportunity, I plan on taking full advantage of it.” This positive attitude bodes well for the Gators as they navigate this unexpected challenge.
The running back depth chart also features freshmen Kahnen Daniels and Jadan Baugh, both of whom have received praise from running backs coach Jabbar Juluke for their potential and unique skill sets. Additionally, veteran Cam Carroll, returning from an ACL injury, could offer experienced depth if he fully recovers.
While Johnson’s absence is a concern, it’s important to note that his injury is not considered season-ending. There is optimism that he may return for the season opener or shortly thereafter. In the meantime, this situation provides an opportunity for the younger backs to prove themselves and potentially add new dimensions to the Gators’ offense.
