Breaking: Canadiens Land $34 Million Blockbuster Deal For Another Experienced Player

Patrik Laine, forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, has requested a trade, with one proposed deal sending him to the Montreal Canadiens.

Laine was cleared to return from the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program on July 26, which sparked rumors of a potential trade. PuckPedia’s new PuckGM tool allows users to create their own trades, and one user proposed a multi-player deal involving Laine and the Canadiens.

Proposed Trade:

  • Canadiens receive: Patrik Laine
  • Blue Jackets receive: Mike Matheson, Josh Anderson

Laine has two years remaining on his four-year, $34.8 million contract with Columbus, signed in 2022. His struggles with health and consistency have led to his trade request.

Acquiring Laine would provide the Canadiens with an additional goal-scoring threat, enhancing their playoff prospects for the 2024-25 NHL season. Meanwhile, Columbus would receive Josh Anderson, who has three years left on his contract and could replace Laine. Anderson has struggled recently with Montreal, recording only 20 points in 78 games last season, and might benefit from a change of scenery. Returning to Columbus, where he began his NHL career, could revive his performance.

Mike Matheson is a reliable defenseman who could play on the top or second pairing for Columbus. With two years left on his contract, he could also be a trade asset if the Blue Jackets fall out of playoff contention.

Blue Jackets’ Stance: Columbus GM Don Waddell emphasized that they won’t trade Laine without receiving a beneficial return. They aim for a trade that makes sense for the team, without retaining salary, and will consider all potential offers.

Laine, drafted second overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2016 NHL draft, has requested this trade due to his challenges with the Blue Jackets.

Canadiens’ Strategy: Montreal has focused on building through the draft and signing key players to long-term deals, rather than making significant free-agent acquisitions. GM Kent Hughes stated their commitment to the long-term plan over short-term gains.

The Canadiens will begin the 2024-25 NHL season at home on Oct. 9 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
