Sabres and Luukkonen Secure Long-Term Commitment
The Buffalo Sabres and goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen have reached an agreement on a five-year contract extension worth $23.75 million, solidifying his role as a key part of the team’s future. After a standout season in 2023-24, Luukkonen is poised to lead Buffalo to a playoff berth in the upcoming season.
Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 215 pounds, the Espoo, Finland native had a career year last season. Drafted by Buffalo in the second round (54th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft, Luukkonen has steadily developed into a reliable goaltender. His improved movement and patience in the net have enhanced his performance, and his size limits opponents’ shooting options while his agility helps him make crucial saves.
In the 2023-24 season, Luukkonen played the most games of his NHL career, posting a record of 27-22-4, with a 2.57 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage, and five shutouts. He achieved career-highs in saves (1,388), shots against (1,470), minutes (3,081), and penalty minutes (8). His career statistics include a record of 45-41-10, a 2.98 GAA, a .904 save percentage, and five shutouts.
Luukkonen enters the 2024-25 season as the Sabres’ starting goaltender. Devon Levi, Buffalo’s younger netminder, struggled last season with a record of 10-8-2, a 3.10 GAA, and a .899 save percentage. While Levi continues to develop, he is expected to play around 25 games this season.
Luukkonen’s development has included five stints with the Rochester Americans of the AHL and a brief period with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. These experiences have honed his skills and prepared him for a full-time role in the NHL.
Despite his youth, Luukkonen displayed flashes of brilliance last season, making timely saves and securing wins for the Sabres. This contract extension is a beneficial move for both Luukkonen and the team as he continues to excel in Buffalo.
