The New York Yankees have activated catcher Jose Trevino from the 10-day Injured List after a brief rehab stint following a quad injury. Trevino will be available for Friday’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers after the Yankees wrapped up a three-game set against the Chicago White Sox. To make room for Trevino on the roster, backup catcher Carlos Narvaez has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Before his injury, Trevino was sharing catching duties with rookie Austin Wells, but Wells’ recent hot streak at the plate might reduce Trevino’s playing time. Prior to landing on the IL, Trevino had a batting line of .244/.303/.411, with eight home runs, 27 RBIs, and 22 runs scored.
Wells, who has frequently batted cleanup, is slashing .257/.347/.426 this season with nine homers and 36 RBIs. Now in his second year with the Yankees, Wells has shown significant improvement after a quieter rookie campaign where he hit .229/.257/.486 with four home runs and 13 RBIs in 2023. Manager Aaron Boone has demonstrated confidence in Wells both offensively and defensively, especially after his 3-for-5 performance with a home run and three RBIs in Wednesday’s 10-2 win over the White Sox.
Though Trevino’s 2024 numbers aren’t standout, he has previously earned All-Star honors, making the American League team in 2022. That season, he played 115 games for the Yankees, slashing .248/.283/.388 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs. Trevino joined the Yankees in 2022 after spending his first four MLB seasons with the Texas Rangers.
The Yankees are currently leading the AL East and are locked in a tight race with the Baltimore Orioles for the division title. After a midseason slump, the Yankees have bounced back, winning 12 of their last 17 games. The offense appears to be clicking again, scoring eight or more runs in three of their last four wins, including a game where outfielder Juan Soto hit three home runs in a 4-1 victory over the White Sox.
