The Washington Commanders continued reshaping their roster on Tuesday by signing veteran wide receiver Martavis Bryant and releasing kicker Ramiz Ahmed.
With Ahmed’s release, Riley Patterson remains the only kicker on Washington’s roster, though his position isn’t secure. Head coach Dan Quinn emphasized that the kicker spot is still up for grabs.
“It’s still an open competition for us,” Quinn said ahead of Tuesday’s practice. “We felt it was important for Riley to get more reps this week, both in practice and during the game against Miami.”
Standing at 6-foot-4, Bryant brings a different dimension to a Commanders wide receiver group that is mostly composed of smaller, shiftier players.
“Martavis has a unique skill set with his size and length, especially useful in the red zone,” Quinn said, adding that the 32-year-old has the build of a linebacker playing receiver.
Bryant last played in the NFL in 2018 with the Oakland Raiders and has since spent time in various leagues, including the Canadian Football League, the Indoor Football League, Fan Controlled Football, and the XFL.
For the past two seasons, Bryant was on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad, where Quinn was the defensive coordinator.
“He’s in great shape, has the quickness to compete, and is eager to improve,” Quinn said. “He’s been ready for this opportunity for a while.”
