Pittsburgh Pirates veteran Andrew McCutchen rejoined the lineup last week after a brief absence but revealed that he was playing through a left knee injury that was only 70 percent healed. Now, that same knee issue will sideline the former MVP for additional games, as the Pirates have placed McCutchen on the 10-day injured list, according to the team’s account on X.
The Pirates have struggled significantly since the All-Star break, holding the second-worst record in baseball, only ahead of the Chicago White Sox entering Saturday’s play. The team managed to end a 10-game losing streak on Friday, thanks to a strong performance from NL Rookie of the Year frontrunner Paul Skenes.
However, the win came at a cost, as McCutchen aggravated his knee while running the bases in the seventh inning, forcing him to exit the game. According to ESPN, he was placed on the IL due to inflammation in his left knee.
This setback is a significant blow to the Pirates, who will now have to manage without McCutchen as they continue to navigate a difficult stretch of the season.
