Breaking: Seattle Kraken Lands Contract Deal worth $50 million For Another Top Talented Player

The Seattle Kraken secured a seven-year contract with center Matty Beniers on Tuesday, ensuring that the first draft pick in franchise history and former Calder Trophy winner will remain with the team through the 2030-31 season.

Beniers’ new contract carries an average annual value of $7.14 million, making him the first Kraken draft pick to sign a contract extension. Previously a restricted free agent, Beniers is now locked in as a core part of the team.

“Matty has been integral to our team since his NHL debut, both on the ice and in his commitment to our community and fans,” said Seattle general manager Ron Francis. “Securing Matty’s new contract was a top priority this offseason, and we’re thrilled to have it finalized. We look forward to seeing Matty continue to grow as a player and contribute to more memorable moments for our franchise.”

Drafted No. 2 overall in the 2021 NHL draft, Beniers made his debut late in Seattle’s inaugural season. He quickly emerged as one of the league’s top young centers during his first full season, scoring 24 goals and 57 points, and earning the title of the league’s top rookie. Beniers played a key role in leading Seattle to the playoffs in just their second season.

However, both Beniers and the Kraken faced challenges last season, with the team struggling offensively. Beniers’ production dropped to 15 goals and 37 points, and his shooting percentage declined from 16.2% in 2022-23 to 11.3% last season.

The Kraken are hopeful that under new coach Dan Bylsma, Beniers can regain his offensive prowess from his rookie year. Last season, the team’s defense and goaltending were solid, but their offensive struggles led to them missing the playoffs, averaging just 2.61 goals per game and being held to one goal or fewer in 27 of their 82 games.

A return to consistent scoring from Beniers would be a significant boost for Seattle’s offense. Notably, Beniers didn’t score his first goal last season until the 14th game and had just 19 points in the first 45 games before the All-Star break.

Beniers’ contract extension mirrors the length and value of the deal that defenseman Brandon Montour signed with the Kraken during free agency.
