The South Carolina Gamecocks football program is entering a new chapter following Spencer Rattler’s departure to the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. Throughout the offseason, the quarterback position was a competition between LaNorris Sellers, Robby Ashford, and Davis Beville. However, on Tuesday, head coach Shane Beamer officially named Sellers as the starting quarterback for the 2024 season opener, according to Jordan Kaye of The State.
“South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer has chosen LaNorris Sellers to lead the offense as the starting quarterback for the 2024 season opener. Sellers, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound graduate of South Florence High, will take the helm.”
Last season, Sellers saw limited action as a true freshman, backing up Rattler. He threw for 86 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Furman in September and appeared briefly in just two other games.
Now, Sellers has been given the official nod to start the season as South Carolina’s quarterback.
Shane Beamer explained his decision on the QB1 role. The competition primarily involved Sellers and Ashford, who transferred from Auburn, but Beamer ultimately decided to go with Sellers.
Beamer informed both Ashford and Beville on Tuesday, explaining why Sellers was his choice, as reported by Jordan Kaye.
“LaNorris has been consistent,” Beamer said. “He’s improved each week, showing poise, consistency, and a strong understanding of our game plan. He’s met our expectations since spring practice.”
However, Beamer also hinted that Ashford could still see some playing time and emphasized that they would play the best option each week.
