The Toronto Maple Leafs have yet to bolster their forward group, but a trade proposal involving the Buffalo Sabres could change that. Using PuckPedia’s new PuckGM tool, a user suggested a trade that would see the Maple Leafs acquire Jordan Greenway from the Sabres.
Proposed Trade:
- Maple Leafs receive: Jordan Greenway ($1.5 million salary retained by Buffalo)
- Sabres receive: Pontus Holmberg and Florida’s 2025 second-round pick
This trade could be beneficial for Toronto as they would gain a gritty, veteran forward in Greenway, who could provide some much-needed scoring depth in the bottom six—a known issue for the team. Buffalo would retain half of Greenway’s $3 million salary, as he enters the final year of his three-year, $9 million contract.
Greenway has played in 401 NHL games, tallying 52 goals and 99 assists for 151 points. Last season with Buffalo, he posted 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 67 games.
Pontus Holmberg, a 25-year-old forward, might fit better with Buffalo’s young core and could see a larger role with the Sabres. He has one year remaining on his $800,000 contract and recorded 7 goals and 10 assists for 17 points in 54 games last season.
Maple Leafs GM Expects Further Moves: Toronto has been relatively quiet since making major acquisitions on July 1, including Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Anthony Stolarz. Although there were rumors about trading Mitch Marner and John Tavares, no such moves have materialized. However, GM Brad Treliving has hinted that the team could still make additional changes before the season starts.
“We’ve still got five weeks or so till camp. And, you know, we’re not set yet,” Treliving said on TSN 1050’s OverDrive. “We continue to look at ways to make our team better. Sometimes people fall in love with ‘let’s make a big change just to make a big change,’ but it doesn’t make sense if it doesn’t improve the team.”
With just over $1.2 million in cap space, the Maple Leafs may need to be strategic in any further moves.
Sabres GM Aims for Playoff Contention: The Buffalo Sabres have been busy this offseason, signing forwards Jason Zucker, Sam Lafferty, and Nicolas Aube-Kubel, along with defenseman Dennis Gilbert. They also traded for Beck Malenstyn and Ryan McLeod.
GM Kevyn Adams believes these moves have made the Sabres a tougher team to play against, as they aim to end their playoff drought, which has persisted since the 2010-11 season.
“We had goals coming into this offseason… we wanted to be harder to play against, bring in more physicality, and build a team that’s relentless on the forecheck and defensively responsible,” Adams said.
Buffalo will begin its 2024-25 NHL season on October 4 against the New Jersey Devils.
