The Washington football program is entering a new phase with significant changes on the horizon. With Kalen DeBoer departing to succeed Nick Saban at Alabama, and Jedd Fisch leaving Arizona to take over at Washington, the program is in transition. Meanwhile, Michael Penix Jr.
has declared for the NFL Draft after leading the Huskies to the College Football Playoff national championship game.
In light of these changes, Washington has named Will Rogers as their starting quarterback, according to Jordan Schultz. Rogers, who transferred from Mississippi State, is stepping into a key role for the team. Schultz also hinted that freshman Desmond Williams Jr., a highly regarded recruit, might see some action this season, adding intrigue to the Huskies’ quarterback situation.
Rogers, who joined Washington after a notable stint at Mississippi State, had a standout 2022 season with 3,713 passing yards and 34 touchdowns but experienced a setback in 2023.He managed only 1,626 yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions, partly due to missing four games with a shoulder injury.
As he takes on the starting role at Washington, he will be leading a team in the midst of rebuilding, with many players having moved on to the NFL and the team now competing in the Big Ten Conference alongside USC, UCLA, and Oregon.
The Huskies’ 2024 season will start with four consecutive home games against Weber State, Eastern Michigan, Washington State, and Northwestern, followed by a road game against Rutgers. Will Rogers will lead the team as they embark on this new chapter, and it will be crucial to watch how the quarterback situation evolves throughout the season.
