The New York Yankees, along with other MLB teams, had the opportunity to expand their rosters as September began on Sunday. Many anticipated that the Yankees would call up their top prospect, Jasson Dominguez, to give him more playing experience.
However, that didn’t happen. The 21-year-old was not included in the Yankees’ roster expansion. Manager Aaron Boone explained the decision on Sunday.
“When he does come up here, you’ll want to play him every day. So, he’ll stay in the conversation. I feel like he’s been playing well recently, especially coming back from his oblique injury. It’s a tough call right now, but that doesn’t mean it won’t change in a few days, a week, or two weeks,” Boone said to reporters, according to The Athletic. “For now, it’s important for him to keep playing.”
This decision is noteworthy given the Yankees’ recent performance. They suffered a 14-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Despite leading their division with a 79-58 record, the Yankees have been struggling, with a 6-8 record over their last 14 games and having lost four of their last five.
The New York Yankees decided not to call up Jasson Dominguez, as Manager Aaron Boone explained to reporters. Dominguez had missed time earlier in the season due to an oblique injury, which influenced their decision. Boone indicated that the team wants to ensure Dominguez is fully ready and playing regularly before making such a move.
The 20-year-old Dominican Republic native made his MLB debut with the Yankees in September of last year and appeared in one game earlier this season. Playing time could be a concern for Dominguez in New York, given the presence of Alex Verdugo, Aaron Judge, and Juan Soto as the starting outfielders, while Giancarlo Stanton serves as the primary designated hitter.
Despite this, Dominguez has performed well in the minors this season, boasting a .313 batting average and an .870 OPS across three different levels.
