The Minnesota Vikings demonstrated their dominance on the road in their season opener against the New York Giants, but facing the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2 presents a new challenge.
Quarterback Sam Darnold addressed this reality in a media session on Wednesday, September 11, while also highlighting the edge he might have in this matchup.
Having spent the entirety of 2023 as a backup to Brock Purdy with the 49ers, Darnold shared that his experience there was highly beneficial. “It was invaluable to learn how things operate both schematically and organizationally,” Darnold said.
“Being immersed in that environment for a year gave me a solid understanding of their defense, although I expect they will have new strategies this season.”
In addition to gaining insights into the 49ers’ coaching strategies and player strengths, Darnold mentioned that being part of a successful team for the first time in his NFL career was a significant learning experience.
“I learned a great deal last year, from game plans to weekly studies. It was a huge opportunity for personal growth and understanding football better,” he noted.
Darnold had a standout performance in Week 1, completing 19 of 24 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns in a commanding 28-6 victory.
He did throw an interception, but it occurred after being hit by a defender, which affected the pass’s accuracy. During his time with the 49ers last season, Darnold appeared in 10 games and made one start, accumulating 297 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.
