On Monday, the New York Yankees placed DJ LeMahieu on the 10-day injured list due to a persistent hip issue and called up top prospect Jasson Domínguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
LeMahieu is dealing with a right hip impingement, and manager Aaron Boone indicated that there is a chance the infielder may not return this season. Boone noted that LeMahieu’s condition has fluctuated, showing improvement on some days but worsening on others.
LeMahieu, 36, who has earned two batting titles, has struggled this season, batting .204 with two home runs and 26 RBIs over 67 games.
He also missed the Yankees’ first 55 games of the season due to a slow-healing fracture in his right foot. Last season, he had a .243 average with 15 homers and 44 RBIs in 136 games, and his batting average has dipped to .231 since his second batting title in 2020.
Domínguez, who is set to play center field and bat sixth in Monday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, is a promising addition to the Yankees’ lineup. Boone expressed strong support for Domínguez, praising his talent and the opportunity he has earned.
Domínguez was not called up when rosters expanded earlier this month but will also see time in left field. He made a brief appearance earlier this season, going 0-for-4 in the Little League Classic, and has performed well in the minors, hitting .314 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 58 games.
In addition to LeMahieu’s placement on the IL and Domínguez’s promotion, the Yankees activated Jon Berti from the injured list after he missed 90 games with a left calf strain.
Berti, acquired from the Miami Marlins, had a .273 average with one home run and six RBIs before his injury. The team also designated reliever Anthony Misiewicz for assignment. Misiewicz, who appeared in one game for New York this season, had a solid record of 3-2 with a 3.33 ERA in 44 appearances for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
