Major Breaking: Setback For The Lions As Brad Holmes Confirm The Departure Of Another Top Experienced Player

Lions general manager Brad Holmes expressed a desire to add a kicker to the practice squad as training camp concluded, leading to the signing of Greg Joseph last week. However, practice squad players are always vulnerable to being signed by other teams, and that occurred for the Lions on Tuesday.

According to his agent, Brett Tessler, the New York Giants have signed Joseph to their active roster from the Lions’ practice squad.

Joseph served as an experienced backup for the Lions, and his addition did not indicate any insecurity regarding Jake Bates’ position. Bates has performed well, making all eight of his kicks in two games, including five field goals and three extra points, justifying the trust shown in him during the preseason.

In New York, Joseph faces an immediate opportunity due to the Giants losing their kicker, Graham Gano, to a hamstring injury during last Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. Gano had been dealing with a groin issue in practice but no backup plans were in place. The Giants’ lack of a viable kicker ultimately cost them the game against Washington.

With Joseph’s departure, the Lions now have an open spot on their practice squad, which they may fill with another veteran kicker—options include former Lions Riley Patterson and Randy Bullock. Although Bates has secured the starting role and performed well, having a veteran presence is still seen as valuable. Additionally, with Tim Patrick likely heading to the 53-man roster soon, the Lions could end up needing to fill two practice squad spots as they approach the start of the practice week on Wednesday.
