Hammond tight end Mike Tyler has been closely following South Carolina’s recent games. Tyler, who committed to LSU in August, attended the Tigers’ game in Columbia on September 14 as a fan and returned last Saturday for the Akron game as an invited guest of USC tight ends coach Shawn Elliott.
The Gamecocks’ relationship with Tyler (6-5, 225) has been inconsistent during his recruitment. He visited for the Clemson game last season and attended a junior day in February, but didn’t take an official visit in June, which led many to believe South Carolina was moving on from him. However, the Gamecocks have reignited their interest.
“They expressed their desire to reopen discussions and try to flip me to become a Gamecock,” Tyler said, acknowledging that both sides felt communication had been lacking. “We thought it would be best to revisit later in the season.” This season, Tyler has recorded 18 catches for 330 yards and four touchdowns.
Elliott plans to scout him on Friday night, but Tyler feels Elliott already has a strong understanding of his abilities. “He likes my physicality and my ability to run and catch. From the games I attended, tight ends are heavily involved in their offense and running game.”
Tyler’s commitment to LSU was influenced by how they developed junior tight end Mason Taylor, who has been a key player for the team. “The culture at LSU is amazing, with great food and Southern hospitality. Watching Mason’s growth gave me hope that I could come in and earn playing time early,” Tyler explained. He likes the way LSU utilizes tight ends, noting that Taylor averages about five receptions a game.
This Saturday, Tyler will visit Duke and is also planning an official visit to USC for the Ole Miss game next weekend. While he has already taken his official visit to LSU, he intends to return for the Ole Miss matchup. Currently, USC, Duke, and LSU are the only programs he is considering. “I’m feeling great and exploring my options while still remaining committed for now,” he said.
