New York Yankees utility infielder DJ LeMahieu has been sidelined for much of September due to a hip injury, but his return for the postseason remains a possibility.
According to NJ.com’s Max Goodman, LeMahieu is feeling “encouraged” by his rehabilitation progress and aims to increase his baseball activities this week in hopes of being ready for the ALDS next week.
LeMahieu is uncertain about his role upon returning, especially with Anthony Rizzo taking over the everyday first base position and Oswaldo Cabrera also getting some time there.
Nonetheless, he is eager to contribute to the team’s goal of winning the World Series in 2024. “I don’t know if they’ll use me or not, but I’m definitely gonna try to be available,” LeMahieu stated.
This season has been challenging for LeMahieu, who missed the first two months due to a foot injury and has struggled since his return, hitting just .204 with a .528 OPS, two home runs, and 26 RBIs in 67 games.
While it’s unlikely he will be an everyday player in the postseason unless there’s an injury, his versatility could still be beneficial for defensive purposes. He would also provide backup at first base, as the Yankees lack another experienced option. The situation remains uncertain, but if he can return in time for the ALDS, he hopes to overcome his struggles and aid the team in their championship pursuit.
