New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo exited Saturday’s 9-4 defeat against the Pittsburgh Pirates after getting hit on his right hand during the seventh inning.
He was struck by a slider from Ryan Borucki and initially winced in pain but remained in the game after being evaluated by head athletic trainer Tim Lentych.
Following the Yankees’ at-bats in the seventh, Oswaldo Cabrera switched to shortstop while Anthony Volpe took over at shortstop. Rizzo had previously missed 62 games due to a fractured right forearm from a collision with Red Sox reliever Brennan Bernardino on June 16.
This season, he has a batting average of .228 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs in 92 games, including a strong .380 (8-for-21) since his return from the injured list on September 1.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick is set to undergo an MRI on his left hip after crashing into a wall during Friday’s 8-4 win over the New York Mets.
He left the game in the third inning, just days before the Brewers begin their wild-card playoff series on Tuesday.
Frelick has shown versatility this season, starting at least 21 games in each of the three outfield positions and serving as the starting right fielder for 87 games.
The 24-year-old has a batting average of .259, with 2 home runs, 32 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 145 games this year. Over his two seasons and 202 career games with the Brewers, he has a .255 batting average, 5 home runs, 56 RBIs, and 25 steals.
