Ahead of their postseason series against the Kansas City Royals starting Saturday in the Bronx, the New York Yankees have unveiled their 26-man roster for the best-of-five American League Division Series. The most notable exclusion is right-handed starter Marcus Stroman.
With two off days in the ALDS schedule, the Yankees opted for a smaller, 11-man pitching staff. This also allows for a three-man rotation, which contributed to the decision to leave Stroman off the roster in favor of speedster and pinch-running specialist Duke Ellis.
Stroman, 33, was a key part of the Yankees’ rotation during the regular season, helping them secure the AL East title. He made 29 starts and one relief appearance, posting a 4.31 ERA and a 95 ERA+ with 113 strikeouts and 60 walks over 154 2/3 innings.
While his overall numbers are respectable, he has struggled since June, recording a 5.70 ERA, likely influencing the Yankees’ decision. If the Yankees progress to the best-of-seven American League Championship Series, they could add Stroman to the roster at that time.
It’s also worth noting that Stroman, in his first season with the Yankees, is owed $18.5 million for 2025, with an $18 million option for 2026 that will automatically vest if he pitches 140 innings next season.
In their matchup against the Royals, the Yankees will start ace Gerrit Cole in Saturday’s opener, followed by Carlos Rodón in Game 2, and either Luis Gil or Clarke Schmidt for Game 3. The Royals will counter with Michael Wacha on Saturday.
