Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell expressed hope that the injury causing running back Aaron Jones to exit Sunday’s game won’t result in a lengthy absence.
O’Connell noted that Jones’ right hip will be assessed, but he is optimistic it will be a “short-term” issue. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Jones is scheduled for an MRI on Monday.
Jones left the game against the New York Jets in London late in the first quarter and did not return. Prior to his exit, he had seven carries for 29 yards and made an impressive 24-yard catch from backup quarterback Nick Mullens, who stepped in briefly while starter Sam Darnold was evaluated.
In Jones’ absence, Ty Chandler and Myles Gaskin took on the workload but did not make a significant impact. Chandler managed 14 carries for 30 yards, while Gaskin gained just two yards on two carries. Fullback C.J. Ham scored the only offensive touchdown for the Vikings.
Overall, the Vikings’ offense struggled, particularly after Jones left. Fortunately, the defense played exceptionally well, intercepting Aaron Rodgers three times and limiting the Jets to just 5 out of 17 on third downs.
At 5-0, the Vikings have a bye next weekend, allowing Jones an extra week to recover. They will face the Detroit Lions on October 20.
Throughout his eight NFL seasons, Jones has missed time in all but two, including this year. He has recorded 71 carries for 350 yards and one touchdown, along with 17 receptions for 167 yards and another score this season.
