The New York Yankees aim to secure a two-game lead over the Kansas City Royals in the ALDS, but regardless of the result in Game 2, manager Aaron Boone has already named Clarke Schmidt as the starter for Week 3. Boone expressed confidence in Schmidt, calling him the “right man for the job.”
In 2024, Schmidt has performed well with a 2.85 ERA and a 93/30 K/BB ratio over 16 starts. However, his last three outings raised some concerns, as he allowed four, three, and three runs in those games.
Prior to that, he had not given up more than two runs in his previous seven starts and has recorded at least five strikeouts in all but two appearances this season.
The main drawback for Schmidt is his limited postseason experience, having only pitched in three playoff games in his five-year career, all as a reliever in 2022. He will be looking to improve on a tough 11.57 ERA and a K/BB ratio of 1/2.
Despite these challenges, Boone believes Schmidt is the right choice. The outcome of Game 2 could significantly influence the ALDS, but whether the Yankees win or lose, Boone is confident in Schmidt stepping up.
With Schmidt taking the mound, it seems Lucas Gil will likely be utilized from the bullpen. Gil has a solid 15-7 record, 3.50 ERA, and a 171/77 K/BB ratio, but after allowing six runs in his last game and struggling with walks, Boone plans to use him judiciously.
As Schmidt prepares for his first MLB playoff start, all eyes will be on him. With Boone’s confidence backing him, there’s reason for hope among Yankees fans heading into Game 3.
