JUST-IN: Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell Stirs the Pot with Surprising Remarks About His Starter’s Future

The Minnesota Vikings are eager to return to winning ways after their bye week, aiming to bounce back from two consecutive losses following a strong 5-0 start.

They are set to host the Indianapolis Colts at US Bank Stadium for Sunday Night Football, a game that could be pivotal for their season.

However, the Vikings have a specific strategy in mind regarding their quarterback, Sam Darnold. Journalist Trevor Squire highlighted that Darnold has faced significant pressure this season, ranking sixth in the league for the most sacks taken, with 21 so far.

He is one of only five quarterbacks with a sack rate exceeding 10% and the only one still starting after eight weeks.

Despite Darnold’s mobility being a potential asset, head coach Kevin O’Connell is cautious about relying on it too heavily. He expressed to KFAN’s Paul Allen the importance of not developing a mentality that depends on Darnold’s improvisational skills.

O’Connell noted that when Darnold tries to create plays on his own, it can lead to negative outcomes, such as significant losses on sacks.

O’Connell emphasized the need for the team to maintain rhythm and timing within their offensive strategy.

He believes it’s crucial to implement a fast-paced approach that allows them to get the ball out quickly and into the hands of their playmakers, minimizing the chances of Darnold holding onto the ball for too long and risking further sacks.
