The New York Yankees may be prepared to invest heavily in a top reliever this offseason.
Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported on Friday that the Yankees have shown interest in free-agent reliever Carlos Estevez as the offseason gets underway. However, Morosi also mentioned that the Yankees are targeting “many” other relievers in addition to Estevez.
Estevez, 31, had a strong 2023 season, earning an All-Star nod with the Los Angeles Angels. He finished the year with a 2.45 ERA between the Angels and Philadelphia Phillies.
Despite his effectiveness, Estevez is considered more of a fly-ball pitcher and lacks elite swing-and-miss stuff. Additionally, he has blown 19 saves over the past four seasons and recently allowed one of the most memorable home runs of the 2024 postseason.
For the Yankees, right-hander Luke Weaver seems to be in line to assume the closer role, but the team faces a potential overhaul of its bullpen, as several key arms—including Tim Hill, Clay Holmes, and Tommy Kahnle—are set to hit free agency.
While the Yankees have been linked to several other potential signings, it appears that adding relief pitching will be a major focus for them this winter.
