The St. Louis Cardinals have signed catcher Chance Sisco to a minor league contract for the 2025 season, as announced on the team’s Player Development account on X.
Sisco, who will turn 30 in February, has five years of major league experience, though he hasn’t played in the big leagues since 2021. Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft, he quickly ascended through the minor league ranks, impressing with his bat at every level.
By 2017, he was considered the Orioles’ top prospect by outlets such as Baseball America, MLB Pipeline, ESPN, and FanGraphs. However, his major league career did not live up to the hype. In 196 MLB games from 2017 to 2021, Sisco posted a .197/.317/.337 slash line, good for an 82 wRC+, which was below par for a catcher. Additionally, his defensive metrics, including blocking, throwing, and framing, were below average.
After being designated for assignment by the Orioles in June 2021, Sisco was claimed by the New York Mets. However, he appeared in just five games for the Mets before being DFA’d again in September.
He then spent time in the minor league systems of the Mariners and Twins, as well as playing for the Acereros de Monclova in the Mexican League and the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League. His strong performance in the Atlantic League (.274/.416/.609) caught the attention of the Cardinals, who signed him to a minor league deal in August.
Sisco’s brief stint with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds also impressed the organization, as he went 5-for-23 with one home run, one walk, and two hit-by-pitches over seven games.
In other Cardinals news, the team also confirmed the signing of left-handed pitcher Packy Naughton to a minor league contract, a move Naughton himself shared via Instagram.
Additionally, St. Louis announced the re-signing of nine other minor league players for the 2025 season, including right-handed pitchers Augusto Calderon, Angel Cuenca, Inohan Paniagua, Dionys Rodríguez, Victor Santos, and Leonardo Taveras; catcher Gavin Collins; infielder Ramon Mendoza; and utility player Darlin Moquete.
