Even after reaching the World Series, the New York Yankees have a busy offseason ahead. Their top priority will be securing a long-term contract for superstar slugger Juan Soto. However, with other contenders like the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Boston Red Sox also pursuing Soto, the Yankees face stiff competition.
Beyond that, the team will likely make moves to strengthen its infield, particularly with first baseman Anthony Rizzo and second baseman Gleyber Torres entering free agency. Additionally, the Yankees will need to address their pitching staff, especially after starter Marcus Stroman was excluded from the postseason rotation.
In terms of bolstering the rotation, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer predicts the Yankees will sign veteran starter Justin Verlander to a one-year, $15 million deal for the 2025 season.
If the Yankees do sign Verlander, they would be adding one of baseball’s most accomplished pitchers—though with some risk. Verlander, who started his 19th season on the injured list, struggled to regain his form in 2024.
In 17 starts with the Houston Astros, he posted a 5.48 ERA, and his fastball velocity dropped. However, Verlander has repeatedly stated that he believes he has “a lot more to give,” and his track record is undeniable.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner and nine-time All-Star could bounce back. If the Yankees land Verlander on a one-year deal, they could be hoping he returns to his 2023 form, when he posted a 3.22 ERA in 27 starts for both the Astros and the New York Mets.
If he does, Verlander would provide a strong addition to the Yankees’ rotation, joining Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil. The Yankees may also be motivated to bring Verlander to New York as part of his eventual Hall of Fame journey, giving him a chance to wear the pinstripes before he retires.
