BIG-NEWS: Major Setback As 2-Time All-Star Infielder Leaves Yankees For Division Rival Due To….

The New York Yankees are facing a crucial offseason with several key free agents, including second baseman Gleyber Torres.

Torres has been the Yankees’ starting second baseman since 2018, but as a free agent, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicts he will leave the Bronx and sign with the Toronto Blue Jays. Reuter envisions Torres as Toronto’s starting second baseman, batting second in their 2025 lineup, which also includes potential additions like Nolan Arenado and Michael Conforto.

Projected Blue Jays Starting Lineup:

  • RF: George Springer
  • 2B: Gleyber Torres
  • 1B: Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • 3B: Nolan Arenado
  • LF: Michael Conforto
  • SS: Bo Bichette
  • CF: Daulton Varsho
  • DH: Spencer Horwitz
  • C: Alejandro Kirk
  • SP: Kevin Gausman

Reuter notes that while the Blue Jays sold off some pieces at the trade deadline, they kept key controllable assets, positioning themselves as buyers this offseason. After their attempt to sign Shohei Ohtani last winter, the organization appears ready to make significant moves. Adding Torres, Arenado, and Conforto would bolster their roster and make them serious contenders.

The Blue Jays have a need at second base, and Torres is a strong fit. The 27-year-old is a two-time All-Star and posted a .257 batting average with 15 home runs and 63 RBIs last season.

What Torres Could Expect in Free Agency: Torres is likely to pursue a short-term deal to boost his value. MLB Trade Rumors predicts he will sign a two-year, $36 million contract. While his free agency outcome remains uncertain, his youth (he’ll turn 28 next season) and status as the best available second baseman give him an edge.

He could secure a three-year deal or potentially a four-year contract, though a shorter term with an opt-out clause is also possible. Torres might aim to re-enter the market at 29 years old after rebuilding his value.

Yankees’ GM Comments on Torres: Although Torres remains a free agent, the Yankees seem to be moving on. At the GM meetings, Yankees GM Brian Cashman expressed gratitude for Torres’ contributions but did not rule out the possibility of a reunion.

Cashman mentioned the Yankees are evaluating internal second-base options, such as Jazz, who shifted to third base in the second half of last season, as well as Caleb Durbin. The team will also consider external free-agent or trade options.

Torres has been with the Yankees since 2016 and made his MLB debut in 2018.
