BREAKING: Significant Boost As Padres Steal Another Elite Player From Mets This Offseason

In a recent free agency prediction, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter suggested that former New York Mets infielder José Iglesias might make the move to the San Diego Padres this offseason.

Reuter highlighted the flexibility the Padres have with players like Luis Arraez and Jake Cronenworth, who can play various positions on the right side of the infield, and Xander Bogaerts, who can cover both middle infield spots. This versatility allows the Padres to explore various options in targeting Iglesias, a veteran who could provide solid defense and exceptional contact hitting.

Iglesias, known for his efficient play, had a standout 2024 season with the Mets. In his 12th year in the Major Leagues, the 34-year-old posted an impressive .337/.381/.448 slash line, along with 39 runs scored in 85 games and a strong .830 OPS. His ability to contribute both offensively and defensively makes him an attractive option for the Padres as they look to bolster their roster for 2025.

Defensively, Iglesias showcased his versatility by playing second base, third base, and shortstop. He recorded 91 putouts, 156 assists, and 38 double plays while committing only three errors, demonstrating his reliability and efficiency on the field. His experience and consistent performance could provide the Padres with a boost in the infield, especially with his ability to handle multiple positions.

Having recently signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Mets ahead of the 2024 season, Iglesias could represent a cost-effective acquisition for San Diego.

His veteran presence could offer a valuable bat for the lower end of the Padres’ lineup, potentially serving as a second leadoff hitter from the No. 9 spot. Furthermore, his reliable defense would help solidify the Padres’ infield.

Iglesias’ underrated impact with the Mets, both during the regular season and postseason, proved that he can be a key contributor. If the Padres sign him, his experience and ability to make a difference in both the field and at the plate could provide a much-needed jolt to San Diego’s lineup in 2025.
