The past few weeks have been eventful for New York baseball. The Yankees have been working to fend off multiple high-spending teams pursuing superstar outfielder Juan Soto.
While the Yankees were considered the frontrunners to retain Soto, they faced a crushing blow when the four-time All-Star chose to join the Mets for the 2025 season and beyond.
In the aftermath of this setback, the Yankees have responded by making two significant moves. They signed Atlanta Braves All-Star pitcher Max Fried to a $218 million deal and acquired elite Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams through trade.
Despite these additions, both the Yankees and Mets are expected to remain active in pursuing further upgrades this offseason.
Alex Bregman Remains a Target
One of the most notable names still on the free-agent market is Alex Bregman, the star third baseman for the Houston Astros. MLB reporter Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 in Houston reports that the Yankees could face competition from their crosstown rival Mets in the race to sign Bregman.
Alexander mentions that Houston is still vying to retain Bregman, though they are contending with at least three other high-payroll teams, including the Yankees, Mets, Boston Red Sox, and the Detroit Tigers—who eliminated the Astros in the 2024 Wild Card Round.
Bregman is projected to command a six-year, $200 million deal, reflecting his market value as a versatile and proven performer.
While some questioned whether the Mets would invest heavily again this offseason, their strong push for Bregman suggests their commitment to building a championship contender for the 2025 season and beyond.
Bregman’s Role in New York
If Bregman signs with the Mets, he would likely take over third base, allowing young star Mark Vientos to shift over to first to fill the void left by All-Star slugger Pete Alonso.
Bregman’s all-around skill set, consistent offensive production, and postseason pedigree make him an appealing addition for the Mets. His ability to perform in big moments would be invaluable as New York continues to build its roster with championship aspirations.
