The New York Yankees strengthened their pitching this offseason by adding ace Max Fried and elite reliever Devin Williams, but they still need to address their offensive needs if they hope to return to the World Series—especially following the loss of Juan Soto to the New York Mets.
According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Yankees are showing interest in two of the top third basemen on the market: free agent Alex Bregman and trade candidate Nolan Arenado.
Feinsand noted, “The Yankees are also believed to have interest in both players, either of whom would take over at third base, shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second.” Other teams reportedly in on Bregman include the Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, and Blue Jays.
The opportunity at third base opened up following the trade of infield prospect Caleb Durbin and Nestor Cortes to Milwaukee for Williams. Both Bregman and Arenado would bring a strong bat and excellent defensive ability to the Yankees’ infield.
Bregman as a Long-Term Solution
Bregman, who will turn 31 at the start of next season, is coming off a solid 2024 with the Houston Astros, hitting 26 home runs, posting a .768 OPS, and recording a 118 wRC+. His addition would give the Yankees a long-term solution at third base—something they’ve been seeking for years—while adding a potent bat to slot between Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
Arenado’s Contract a Potential Hurdle
Arenado presents more risk, as he is a trade candidate with a significant financial commitment. The 33-year-old still has three years and $74 million remaining on his contract with the Cardinals. While his 2024 numbers were modest—hitting 16 home runs with a .719 OPS and a 102 wRC+—he boasts a strong history as an elite hitter and one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball. A change of scenery could help him return to his previous form.
Given the Yankees’ roster gaps, they are likely to add an infielder this offseason, though it remains to be seen if that addition will include Bregman, Arenado, or another option entirely.
