The New York Yankees, along with the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets, are well-versed in intense free-agent bidding wars, as shown by their involvement in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, which ultimately saw Soto join the Mets.
Now, these four teams—plus the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers—are reportedly in another high-stakes battle, this time for Astros infielder Alex Bregman.
Bregman is projected to sign a deal worth around $170 million this offseason, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com added that the six teams listed are all considered serious contenders to land Bregman.
Feinsand noted that the Yankees are particularly interested in both Bregman and Nolan Arenado, with either player likely to step into the third-base role while shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base.
Bregman’s free agency presents an interesting dynamic, as any of these teams can afford his projected asking price of $170–200 million, though the decision will depend on how much each team values his services.
While Bregman commands a higher price, Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals would be a less costly and lower-risk alternative. However, for the Yankees, Bregman appears to be their top choice for third base, and they are considered the favorites to land him this offseason—a surprising development given how the league has evolved over the past few seasons.
