The New York Yankees’ trade for Cody Bellinger nearly guarantees that Alex Verdugo will be playing for a different team in 2025.
While Verdugo’s market has been quiet so far, the Miami Marlins have been suggested as a potential destination. However, the Pittsburgh Pirates could also provide the opportunity Verdugo is seeking next season.
As a rising team in the NL, the Pirates are under pressure to build a competitive roster around Paul Skenes, and Verdugo could be a strong addition in left field, pushing Bryan Reynolds to right field.
With an average annual value of about $15 million, Verdugo’s price tag might be more manageable for the Pirates, especially after their cost-saving trade for Spencer Horwitz at first base, which offers Ben Cherington payroll flexibility.
Verdugo hit .233 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs in 2023 with the Yankees. Although PNC Park is known for favoring pitchers, left-handed hitters have had success there, as seen with players like Pedro Alvarez, Oneil Cruz, and Gregory Polanco.
Given that Verdugo had a somewhat down year, there’s a possibility he might sign for less than his market value. If he does, it would make him even more appealing for the Pirates, as he could provide excellent defensive coverage in left field, complementing Cruz in center and moving Reynolds to right.
