After retiring in 2023, Buddy Pough is returning to South Carolina State as the interim athletic director, according to a report from WLTX on Thursday afternoon.
This will mark Pough’s second stint in the role on an interim basis, having previously stepped in during 2023 after Keisha Campbell’s departure, who now works at Morgan State University Athletics.
This time, he will replace Nathan Cochran, who left the position following the football season.
“I want to express my gratitude to Dr. Cochran on behalf of the Bulldog family for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” stated Alexander Conyers, President of SCSU.
Pough, with a career record of 146–87 and 112–42 in conference play, holds the title of the most successful head coach in South Carolina State football history.
He began with the program in 2002 and led the Bulldogs to national championships in 2009 and 2021. Under his leadership, the team secured or shared the MEAC championship eight times between 2004 and 2021.
Pough also coached notable NFL players, including Darius “Shaquille” Leonard and Javon Hargrave.
