Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is expected to be the top free agent in 2025, and a trade scenario has surfaced involving the Toronto Blue Jays sending him to a division rival.
MLB analyst Jacob Mountz of FanSided has proposed a trade where the New York Yankees acquire Guerrero Jr. in exchange for four players in a blockbuster deal.
The trade would look like this:
Yankees receive:
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Blue Jays receive:
- OF Spencer Jones (Yankees’ No. 2 prospect)
- RHP Will Warren (Yankees’ No. 5 prospect)
- OF Everson Pereira (Yankees’ No. 10 prospect)
This trade would significantly strengthen the Yankees’ lineup by adding Guerrero Jr. as a key offensive weapon and providing flexibility at first or third base. On the other hand, the Blue Jays would bring in three promising young prospects, potentially setting the stage for a rebuilding phase.
Guerrero Jr. is in the final year of his contract with the Blue Jays. In 2024, he posted a .323 average with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs. A four-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger winner, Guerrero Jr.’s future in Toronto is uncertain.
The centerpiece of the Blue Jays’ return would be Spencer Jones, the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect, who was selected 25th overall in the 2022 draft and is expected to debut in 2025.
Will Warren, a right-handed pitcher and the Yankees’ No. 5 prospect, made his MLB debut in 2024 and could provide valuable depth to Toronto’s rotation. Everson Pereira, the Yankees’ No. 10 prospect, has MLB experience and could compete for the Blue Jays’ fourth outfielder role, adding offensive support.
Mountz argues that the Yankees should pursue Guerrero Jr. now to bolster their World Series hopes. While the Yankees have added Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt to their lineup, replacing the hitting production of players like Juan Soto is challenging.
Adding Guerrero Jr. would significantly enhance their offense. The deal would benefit both teams, with the Yankees gaining a major bat and the Blue Jays adding high-potential young talent.
Guerrero Jr., in the final year of his contract, has expressed his desire to re-sign with Toronto but revealed that negotiations have not made much progress. He set a deadline for discussions on a possible extension by the start of Spring Training.
