MAJOR-BREAKING: Yankees Aaron Boone Land Versatile 2-Time World Series Champion in Free Agency

The New York Yankees have already made significant moves in free agency, but there could still be a few more additions to come.

One area where the Yankees could still improve is at third base, as there is an open spot in the infield. MLB analyst Estevao Maximo of Pinstripe Alley suggests that the Yankees should consider pursuing Kike Hernandez in free agency.

“With fewer free agent and trade options left, players still available are receiving more scrutiny, and Hernandez is one such player who fits several needs for the Yankees,” Maximo noted. “Hernandez checked many boxes for the Yankees not long ago, and he was close to signing with them last offseason. According to Hernandez, his final decision came down to the Yankees and Dodgers, and he chose to stay with Los Angeles.”

Maximo further explained that even though the Yankees’ roster has changed since last year, the reasons for pursuing Hernandez remain relevant. As it stands, Oswaldo Cabrera is likely to start in the Yankees’ infield for 2025 alongside Jazz Chisholm Jr., whether at second or third base.

Hernandez, who nearly joined the Yankees last offseason, is known for his ability to play multiple positions with strong defensive skills, which would be a valuable addition to New York’s roster. In 2024, Hernandez posted a .229 batting average with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs for the Dodgers, and he was part of the team’s World Series rosters in both 2020 and 2024.

Maximo argues that Hernandez would add valuable depth to the infield and could also fill in the outfield if needed. If Jasson Dominguez struggles in left field, Hernandez would provide strong defensive support. Maximo also highlights Hernandez’s flexibility, noting his experience at shortstop and center field. While the Yankees hope Dominguez excels, having Hernandez, alongside Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge, would provide strong defense across the outfield.

In the worst-case scenario, Hernandez could serve as a versatile bench player, offering flexibility for various positions and potentially even acting as an emergency pitcher if needed. With over 100 career starts at center field, second base, and shortstop, Hernandez’s versatility would make him a valuable asset for the Yankees. Given his potential interest in joining the Yankees, Maximo believes it may be worthwhile for New York to pursue him again this offseason.

At 33 years old, Hernandez would likely sign a short-term deal, making the move low-risk for the Yankees.

Hernandez has been an important part of the Dodgers’ roster for several years, but his time with Los Angeles seems to be coming to an end. The Dodgers recently signed Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim, which likely closes the door on Hernandez returning to LA. Kim is expected to take on a super-utility role, a position Hernandez previously filled for the Dodgers.
