The Minnesota Vikings have added a new face to their quarterback roster with the addition of Daniel Jones, who steps in after being waived by the New York Giants.
While the change has been expected for some time, it now appears that Jones could play a significant role as he joins the Vikings’ active roster.
His arrival was anticipated due to the Vikings’ desire to secure a compensatory draft pick, and now, with the playoffs approaching, Jones could potentially be a key asset for both the third-string and backup quarterback positions.
Brett Rypien, who had been the Vikings’ third quarterback for the season but never saw game action, was waived to make room for Jones. Last season, Rypien played in two games for the Los Angeles Rams but had no role with the Vikings this year.
Jones, a former sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Duke, spent six seasons with the New York Giants. Across 70 career games, he has thrown for 14,582 yards, with a 70/42 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
With his contract potentially expiring after this season, Jones may seek a new opportunity in free agency, and if he does, the Vikings will receive compensation, potentially enhancing their quarterback options for the future.
Although his tenure with the Giants didn’t go as planned, Jones joined the Vikings in hopes of revitalizing his career, albeit with limited playing time this season. His primary role has been as a backup, potentially stepping in for Sam Darnold if needed, or even replacing Nick Mullens.
Looking ahead, his presence could be crucial in 2025 as the Vikings weigh their quarterback options, possibly including an opportunity to play behind or ahead of J.J. McCarthy.
Jones’ potential return to the Vikings next season would be beneficial. His experience as a starting quarterback and low cost make him an appealing option.
Even if he moves on, the Vikings are assured of receiving some form of compensation for his departure, providing them with added value in their quarterback plans.
