New York shared a report from Bleacher Report’s Jon Heyman, who has been closely following Pete Alonso’s situation with the Mets throughout the offseason. The latest update revealed the main point of contention: the length of the contract.
According to Heyman, the issue between the Mets and Alonso lies in the number of years. “Right now we’re looking at Alonso wanting at least a six-year deal,” Heyman reported on Wednesday, as relayed by SNY.
Alonso, a four-time All-Star, has been in the center of contract talks, with his desire for a long-term commitment being the key sticking point. Heyman had previously mentioned that both sides were at odds over the term of a potential contract, but now it’s clear that Alonso is aiming for a deal lasting six years or more.
While Alonso’s camp is pushing for a longer-term deal, the Mets are reportedly aiming for a shorter contract, around three years. The former 2019 MLB home run leader is expected to earn $30 million per year or more, no matter which agreement he reaches.
In 2023, Alonso rejected the Mets’ seven-year, $158 million extension, and now the Mets will need to increase their offer—specifically, the average annual value—by around $8 million to make the deal happen. As negotiations continue, the two sides could either find common ground or Alonso may explore other opportunities.
