The New York Yankees are reportedly looking to trade starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, and the reasoning behind this move is clear.
Stroman is due to earn nearly $20 million in 2025, but he was left off the Yankees’ World Series roster in 2024. With Max Fried already joining the team this offseason, New York has limited space for Stroman unless they move someone to the bullpen.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently suggested a trade that would send Stroman to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for an infielder.
The proposed deal would have the Yankees receiving infielder Marco Luciano, while the Giants would acquire Stroman and shortstop prospect George Lombard Jr. (ranked No. 4 in the Yankees’ system).
Rymer noted that Luciano, who has consistently ranked among MLB’s top 100 prospects from 2020 to 2024, has struggled to find a role with the Giants due to a crowded infield. Despite a .590 OPS at the MLB level, Luciano has demonstrated solid power, with a hard-hit rate significantly above the league average.
For the Giants, Stroman could potentially have a better fit, and even if he doesn’t pan out, they would still gain a promising shortstop prospect in Lombard.
For the Yankees, Luciano would be a high-upside addition to their infield, especially as they seek a potential replacement for Gleyber Torres.
