The Miami Marlins are facing a significant pitching issue and, oddly, also need to spend money to strengthen their roster. This could open the door for a trade, particularly one involving Marcus Stroman. The Marlins and New York Yankees might find a mutually beneficial deal, especially given the Yankees’ desire to offload Stroman’s $18.33 million contract.
The Marlins need to add around $20 million to their payroll this offseason to avoid a potential grievance. Stroman, a 33-year-old veteran, had a solid 2024 season with a 4.31 ERA and 113 strikeouts over 154.2 innings. Although this was the first season since 2018 that he didn’t have an ERA under 4.0, there’s a good chance his numbers could improve in 2025.
Stroman would bring valuable experience and innings to a Marlins rotation in need of stability. As a two-time All-Star, he wouldn’t have to be the ace on a rebuilding Marlins team but could help ease the load on younger pitchers.
The Yankees may be so eager to move Stroman’s contract that they could include a low-level prospect in the deal to help with salary relief. If that happens, it would be an easy decision for Miami’s front office.
A Stroman trade would allow the Yankees to free up salary space to focus on other free agents after losing superstar Juan Soto. For the Marlins, this deal could help them add a veteran starter, improve their pitching depth, and possibly gain a prospect or late-round draft pick in return.
