The New York Yankees have already strengthened their roster by adding stars like Max Fried, Devin Williams, Paul Goldschmidt, and Cody Bellinger. They could potentially make one more major trade before opening day. According to Fireside Yankees from Empire Sports Media, a trade package has been proposed that would bring Carlos Correa from the Minnesota Twins to New York.
In this deal, the Yankees would receive shortstop Carlos Correa, while the Twins would get infielder George Lombard Jr. (ranked No. 3 prospect), right-handed pitcher Chase Hampton (No. 6 prospect), right-handed pitcher Ian Hamilton, and catcher/first baseman Rafael Flores.
Fireside Yankees highlighted Correa’s ability as a well-rounded hitter who excels at playing elite defense. If the Yankees move him to third base, they believe it could reduce the toll on his body, especially compared to the demanding position of shortstop.
Correa signed a six-year, $200 million contract with the Twins in 2023, which includes vesting options through 2032. Adding Correa at third base would allow Jazz Chisholm Jr. to take over at second base, addressing the Yankees’ infield situation.
While the Twins have said they’re not actively trying to trade Correa, team president Derek Falvey and general manager Jeremy Zoll have emphasized that they are open to listening to offers for any player.
Falvey mentioned they are always willing to consider creative deals, as demonstrated in previous trades. The Yankees would be parting with two of their top 10 prospects, but in return, they would gain one of the league’s top talents.
Correa, a three-time All-Star and Platinum Glove winner, would bring significant value, although his past involvement in the Astros’ 2017 cheating scandal might make his acquisition controversial among some Yankees fans.
