The New York Yankees lost confidence in Gleyber Torres, the second baseman who had held the position since his 2018 debut, when he was named an American League All-Star and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting. Torres, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, had been with the Yankees for seven years but became a free agent without receiving an offer from New York to stay.
Torres signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers just after Christmas, securing his future. However, the Yankees still have no clear plan to fill the void in the middle infield with only 33 days remaining until spring training.
While the Yankees reportedly showed interest in Gavin Lux, the second baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers who played a key role in denying the Yankees a World Series title in 2024, the Dodgers traded Lux to the Cincinnati Reds instead.
Additionally, the Yankees were said to have spoken with Brendan Rodgers, a former Gold Glove winner with the Colorado Rockies who entered free agency after the team declined to offer him a new contract. However, those discussions reportedly led nowhere.
