The New York Mets have made several roster moves in an effort to make a return to the postseason in 2025, but first base remains uncertain with Pete Alonso still unsigned.
Could Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns make a bold move for Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr.? While Guerrero has been a frequent subject of trade rumors this winter, a deal before the season begins seems unlikely.
Even if Guerrero doesn’t agree to an extension with the Jays before spring training, the team will likely push to compete in 2025 after signing outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million contract.
However, if extension talks fall through, things could change quickly. As long as Guerrero’s future with Toronto remains in doubt, the Mets could make a move.
FanSided’s Jacob Mountz suggested a “realistic” trade proposal between the two teams: the Mets would acquire first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and the Blue Jays would receive infielder Mark Vientos, shortstop Jett Williams, infielder Ronny Mauricio, and outfielder Starling Marte.
“Guerrero is a top-tier player, and the price for him would be steep, especially considering he’s a one-year rental with some inconsistency in his career,” Mountz wrote.
“But if the Mets want to land a star first baseman, a package like this could be the asking price.” While Marte’s inclusion would primarily be for salary relief, Vientos, Williams, and Mauricio would be valuable additions for Toronto.
Vientos just had a breakout season in 2024, and Williams (second) and Mauricio (sixth) are ranked among New York’s top-10 prospects, according to MLB.com.
This hypothetical trade would only give the Mets one season of Guerrero, as he’s set to earn $28.5 million in 2025 and will hit free agency next winter. Spotrac estimates his market value at 12 years and $427 million.
