Kentucky faced a tough 2024 season, finishing with a disappointing 4-8 record. As a result, the Wildcats are focused on rebuilding and improving their competitiveness for the 2025 season.
One of their strategies to strengthen the team is by leveraging the transfer portal, and on Monday afternoon, former Louisiana Tech wide receiver Tru Edwards became the latest addition to the Wildcats’ roster. Edwards, who will have one year of eligibility remaining, is expected to bring a significant boost to the receiving corps.
Edwards had an outstanding 2024 season with Louisiana Tech, where he emerged as the Bulldogs’ top receiving threat. He caught 84 passes for 986 yards and 8 touchdowns, leading the team in all major receiving categories. His remarkable performance earned him First-team All-Conference USA honors, highlighting his ability to make a major impact on the field. Edwards’ impressive stats made him one of the standout wide receivers in the conference last season.
Over his three seasons at Louisiana Tech, Edwards played in 27 games, accumulating 107 receptions for 1,270 yards and 8 touchdowns. Prior to transferring to Louisiana Tech, he started his college career at Hawaii, where he played in 10 games during his freshman year and recorded 5 catches for 37 yards. Now, with one final season of eligibility, Edwards is looking to make a difference at Kentucky and help revitalize their passing game in 2025.
Edwards is just one part of a larger effort by Kentucky to rebuild through the transfer portal. With his addition, the Wildcats have now secured a total of 18 players through the portal for the upcoming season. Among the most notable transfers are wide receiver Kendrick Law from Alabama and defensive lineman David Gusta from Washington State, both of whom are expected to make significant contributions to the team next season.
Kentucky’s need for reinforcements in the wide receiver position was particularly pressing after several players left the team. Hardley Gilmore IV, Barion Brown, Dane Key, Anthony Brown-Stephens, and Brandon White all departed during the offseason, leaving the receiving corps thin. The Wildcats’ passing offense struggled in 2024, finishing ranked 112th in the nation, making it clear that adding experienced receivers like Edwards was crucial for improving the unit.
With the addition of Edwards and other transfer portal players, Kentucky is aiming to shore up their offense and become more competitive in 2025. Edwards’ experience and proven performance should provide an immediate boost to the Wildcats’ passing game, and his arrival is part of a broader effort to improve the team’s overall depth and talent for the upcoming season.
